Professor Alan Roberts

This section is headed up by Professor Alan Roberts.

Professor Roberts is the immediate past Vice President of The Royal Society of Medicine and former Pro-Chancellor of The University of Leeds.

Professor Roberts has international standing in the field of Bio-Materials in Surgery and Body Reconstruction. He is Professor of Bio-Materials in Surgery at the Academic Surgical Unit University of Hull, and holds research appointments at Bradford and Brunel Universities. He was awarded the Prince Philip Medal for outstanding research achievement in the field of Implantation Materials in the Human Body, and awarded honorary doctorates from four Universities in recognition of his work, also two Insignia Awards in Technology for Prosthetic Reconstruction in Plastic and Maxillo-Facial Surgery. He is Clinical Director of a Unit in the Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation University of Bradford, being credited with two Drug Licenses. His research has made a major contribution to Surgery and Rehabilitation and his developments are used throughout the Medical field.

Professor M.V. Griffiths

Professor Griffiths is a Professor of Technology at the University of Aston and recently retired as ENT Head & Neck Surgeon at Bristol University Hospitals.

Professor Griffiths has a had a lifelong interest in the technology and engineering aspects of medicine, as well as having a heavy clinical workload.He has participated nationally and internationally in workshops and conferences in medical engineering, robotics and nano technology. In 2001 he was invited to the chair of Technology in Surgery at Aston University.

He has been instrumental in establishing this new section at the RSM which will provide a platform to bring together Doctors, Scientists and Engineers at the cutting edge of medicine.  Professor Griffiths has published widely in both clinical and engineering peer reviewed journals.  He is past president of the BMA (Bristol Division) and of the South West Laryngological Association.

Professor Brian Davies

Professor Davies is Emeritus Professor of Medical Robotics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College and is also Senior Research Investigator.

Professor Davies was awarded a DSc. for his international contribution to Robotic and Computer Aided Surgery systems. He has, to date, produced over 200 refereed conference and journal papers. In June 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Maurice Muller Prize, presented annually for outstanding contributions to Computer Aided Surgery and in 2006 he was presented with the IEE achievement medal for outstanding contributions to Medical Robotics. He started the Mechatronics in Medicine Group which now has an international reputation for its work in Robotic and Computer Assisted Surgery.  Professor Davies has developed a number of robotic surgery and training systems and achieved a 'world first' when his special purpose robot, 'PROBOT', was used in human clinical prostatectomy trials in April '91. He also founded the Company 'ACROBOT Limited' which is now developing both Robotic and CAS systems to help accurately plan and position orthopaedic joint replacements.

Dr Tom Balchin

Dr Balchin is founder and Director of the The ARNI Trust.

Dr Balchin, a stroke survivor, set up Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury in 2001. The ARNI Trust concentrates on training professional fitness instructors through a specialist level Functional Training After Stroke Accreditation. ARNI has 85 active UK instructors, most sponsored by the Stroke Networks or the major stroke charities. ARNI concentrates on matching them up with stroke survivors in their areas who apply.

Dr Balchin’s publications concern high ability, gifted behaviour and stroke. He has worked at Goldsmiths College, University of London and Brunel, Reading and Middlesex Universities. He is a Director of the United Kingdom Rehabilitation Council. Current steering groups include United Kingdom Stroke Forum and United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum.
